Gov Perry easily leads Wendy Davis in Texas

Wendy Davis was rather more concise than a week earlier, but the effect of her latest speech was the same on Monday: cheers and chants from her energised legion of fans protesting the latest attempt by Texas Republicans to pass one of the countrys most restrictive abortion laws.

Looks like Democrat Wendy Davis was a hit last week with Texas voters, but a new poll finds GOP Gov. Rick Perry would still be the favorite in a race against her.

The survey by Public Policy Polling shows Davis, whose marathon filibuster of an abortion bill skyrocketed her into the national conscience, has doubled her name identification in Texas. The state senator from Fort Worth is now the third best-known politician in Texas, behind Perry and U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz..

Davis told Monday that shell take a "second look" at running for governor next year. In a hypothetical matchup against Perry, the poll shows the governor easily outdistances the newest Democratic star, 53% to 39%, among Texas voters.

Perry is set to announce his "exciting future plans" on Monday in San Antonio, according to CNNs Political Ticker blog. He had originally planned to say whether hell run again for Texas governor by July 1, but had to call a special legislative session after the abortion bill died.

Attorney General Greg Abbott, a Republican who is interested in running for governor, would lead Davis 48% to 40%, according to Public Policy Polling. Abbott hasnt said for sure whether hes running, but his fundraising and a recent Web ad narrated by former presidential candidate and actor Fred Thompson gives the impression that hes in the race.

"Wendy Davis made a strong first impression on Texas voters last week," said Dean Debnam, president of the Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling. "But the chances that the state turns blue in 2014 still look pretty slim."
